What should I consider before Porting my Fax Number?

I Want to transfer my Existing Fax or Telephone Number to AFAX. What should I consider?

AFAX supports Local Number Portability (LNP), allowing businesses and individuals to move eligible fax or telephone numbers to the AFAX Platform while continuing to use their existing number.

Porting your number to AFAX allows you to modernize your fax communications without changing the fax number your clients, patients, or partners already use.

What Is Local Number Portability (LNP)?

Local Number Portability (LNP) allows customers to retain their existing telephone or fax number when switching service providers or carriers.

This helps avoid:

  • changing published fax numbers
  • updating marketing materials
  • notifying customers of a new fax number
  • business disruption during migration

Which Numbers Can Be Ported to AFAX?

In many situations, AFAX can support porting of:

  • existing fax numbers
  • business telephone numbers
  • VoIP numbers
  • additional business lines
  • certain wireless/mobile numbers

provided the numbers are supported by participating Canadian telecommunications carriers.

When Can I Request Number Porting?

You may request number porting:

  • during the AFAX sign-up process
  • or at any time after your account has been activated

Our carriers work with major Canadian telecommunications providers across metropolitan areas throughout Canada to process eligible porting requests.

If you are located in the United States or require special arrangements, please contact AFAX Support for additional review and guidance.

Important Considerations Before Porting

1. Keep Your Existing Service Active

Do NOT cancel your existing telephone or fax service before the porting process has been completed successfully.

Cancelling your service too early may result in permanent loss of the number.

2. DSL / ADSL Internet Dependency

If your fax or telephone number is associated with:

  • DSL internet
  • ADSL internet
  • bundled internet services

porting the number may disrupt or disconnect your internet service.

If you are unsure, please contact your current provider or AFAX Support before proceeding.

3. Accurate Account Information Is Required

When submitting your request, you must provide:

  • your current fax or telephone number
  • current carrier information
  • account details exactly as they appear on your billing statement or CSR (Customer Service Record)

Providing incorrect information is one of the most common causes of porting delays or rejections.

Can All Numbers Be Ported?

No. While many numbers are eligible, certain restrictions may prevent successful porting.

Examples may include:

  • inactive numbers
  • unsupported geographic regions
  • pager services
  • carrier restrictions
  • numbers associated with DSL or ADSL services

Port eligibility is ultimately subject to carrier and regulatory approval.

Should I Cancel My Existing Contract?

No.

Before porting your number, we recommend reviewing your existing service agreement to determine whether:

  • early termination fees
  • outstanding balances
  • contractual obligations

may apply.

AFAX is not responsible for any penalties, cancellation fees, or charges imposed by your existing provider.

Can I Keep My Number If I Relocate?

Yes. One of the advantages of cloud-based faxing is location flexibility.

For example, you may port a Toronto fax number to AFAX and continue receiving your faxes while operating from another city or province.

Porting Fees

As of November 2023, porting requests may be subject to a one-time carrier processing fee.

Depending on your current telecommunications provider and service type, the fee typically ranges between:

$30 – $50 per number

Can I Port My Number Away from AFAX Later?

Yes. In most cases, you may transfer your ported number to another eligible provider in the future, provided:

  • your AFAX account remains in good standing
  • there are no outstanding balances or unresolved account issues

Important Note Regarding AFAX-Owned Numbers

Fax numbers originally assigned and owned by the AFAX Platform may not be eligible for external porting requests.

AFAX reserves the right to approve or reject porting requests involving AFAX-owned numbers.

Required Documents for Number Porting

To initiate your porting request, please submit:

  • A completed and signed Letter of Authorization (LOA)
  • A copy of your most recent billing statement from your current provider

The information provided must match your current carrier records exactly.
